HIMSS HIE portal, HIMSS Health Information Exchange (HIE)
If you haven’t used HIMSS HIE resources before, this is a good place to start, since most important categories are laid out on this page. One of the resources available from there is the HIE Toolkit.
HIMSS Health Information Exchange (HIE) Toolkit
The HIMSS Health Information Exchange (HIE) Toolkit offers the latest insights and a solid body of dynamic information on health information exchange (both HIE the noun and HIE the verb), including timely information around some of the more important national and state level initiatives. For those just beginning to explore the HIE concept and inner workings, you can go through all Toolkit modules one by one. For HIE experts interested in some specific aspect, the Toolkit modular structure allows to jump straight to the area of interest.
Here are some of the toolkit modules, with direct links to their content:
Before plunging into the HIE Toolkit modules, HIE novices may actually want to go through the HIE Guide Glossary, a 12-page document created by a group of HIMSS HIE experts.
Health Information Exchange and Meaningful Use
Health Information Exchange began receiving much more attention after the HITECH Act was passed in 2009, followed the government release of Meaningful Use (MU) guidelines. In order to receive certain financial incentives, healthcare providers have to demonstrate that they’ve met the Meaningful Use requirements. Development of Health Information Exchange capability is a key component in successfully demonstrating a provider’s achievement of meaningful use. The Meaningful Use section of the HIMSS website includes, among other pieces, a page specifically covering Health Information Exchange issues in the Meaningful Use context. One of these valuable sources is HIE and Meaningful Use Stage 1 Matrix, a very helpful 13-page document put together by the HIMSS HIE Committee and providing a detailed picture of how Health Information Exchange fits into the Meaningful Use context.
HIMSS State HIT Dashboard
If you want to know how individual states go about implementing Health Information Exchange, a good starting place is the HIMSS State HIT Dashboard. The Dashboard provides an easy-to-read visual interface, including a clickable map of all 50 states.
HIMSS HIELights eNewsletter
The HIMSS HIELights electronic newsletter provides in-depth coverage of HIE activities, trends and initiatives. It comes out once a month, and can be delivered to you by email (subscribe here) or accessed, together will all previous issues, at http://www.himss.org/ASP/topics_FocusDynamic.asp?faid=156
HIMSS Health Information Exchange (HIE) News
If you want more frequent updates than a once-a-month newsletter provides, on all kinds of recent HIE developments, check the HIE News page.
HIMSS books on HIE issues (available through the HIMSS Store)
All of HIMSS website resources are available to HIMSS members for free, and one could spend days, if not weeks, going through all of them. However, if they happen not to answer all of your questions, you may want to check out several books published by HIMSS on HIE-related issues. The books are available online, through the HIMSS Store. Of particular interest is the most recent publication, The Health Information Exchange Formation Guide: The Authoritative Guide for Planning and Forming an HIE in Your State, Region or Community , authored by recognized HIT experts Laura Kolkman and Bob Brown. More information on the book and its authors, including chapter summaries and some helpful downloadable checklists and resources, are available at the book’s companion website, at www.himss.org/hieformationguide.
HIMSS HIE Wiki
Another great resource is the HIE Wiki maintained by HIMSS. Besides providing access to information on different aspects of Health Information Exchange (Technology, HIE Business Planning, Standards, Privacy & Security, etc.), HIE Wiki gives you an opportunity to make your own contribution to the overall knowledge and expertise of HIMSS members.
